This week ASG discussed the very important issue that will affect many students and faculty next year of parking permit price increases for Fall 2013.
Although ASG had proposed bills that included price increases for parking permits, this decision was made too quickly for ASG to have time to get the students’ opinions and make a decision.
The on-campus parking permit prices for Fall 2013 will go up from $245 to $575, along with price increases for every other type of parking permit as well. The bus fee included in tuition will also be increased next Fall.
According to ASG Senator Kat La Valley, ASG Senators had no say in this decision and were simply notified of the changes by parking services. At the open forum this week students were informed that our current buses are 13 years old and the bus life span is 12 years old.
“I understand it [the increase] because we need new buses. Speaking as a student who lives off campus, I ride the bus every single day, and with all these new apartments coming up we’re going to need those buses.”
The money from these price increases will go towards relieving Texas State’s current parking service debt which is around $4 million. Not only will these changes diminish our debt but will also help decongest on-campus space.
