The Texas State Rugby team is gearing up for the new season as they kicked off their first practice last week at the West campus fields. As the team was warming up and running drills, coach Scot Courtney spoke about the teams chemistry and strength despite so many players out with injuries.
“We have a lot of good rugby players. All of our players can play multiple positions depending on the chemistry we need at that time. But we’ve lost a couple of standout players; about eight of them to various injuries. Rugby is a collision sport so there’s going to be injuries. We’ve had to integrate younger players faster than normal. But they’ve all really stepped up and contributed a lot.”

The team exhibited a willingness to participate and engage in the sport but with having so many players out this season, rugby player Evan Von Zurmuehlen spoke about the team and their hope to recruit more players.
“People will come out and stick around for 6 years if they live in San Marcos. We have loyalty but we need to recruit more people.”

If you’re interested in joining the rugby team Courtney encourages people to show up for practice and they will teach you the game. or more information visit the team’s Facebook page at facebook.com/TXST.Rugby.
