Hays County Fire Marshal Mark Chambers is urging residents to be cautious if they plan to fry their turkeys this year. According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 1,000 deep fryer fires happen every year. People either forget or are unaware that if a turkey isn’t completely thawed, the water will cause the oil to spillover. The hot oil is as flammable as gasoline which is why so many deep fryer accidents happen every year.
Chambers says his main concern is where people use their fryers.
“A lot of people fry their turkeys out in the garage or somewhere close to the house. Nationwide there’s been several house fires caused by people cooking turkeys that just got out of hand and caught their houses on fire.”

Chambers says if residents are planning to fry their turkeys, they should find a safe area away from the house and avoid leaving it unattended.
